Outdoor Stage or Big Top? Why British Weather Should Be Part of Your Event Plan
Planning an outdoor event in the UK? Don’t let the weather decide how your guests remember it!
There is something special about an outdoor event - The open sky, fresh air, the atmosphere and the feeling of being at a proper outdoor festival can be fantastic, when the weather plays along.
But there is one thing every UK event organiser has to accept:
You cannot book the weather.
A forecast can change. A dry afternoon can become a heavy shower. Temperatures can drop unexpectedly. Wind can become a concern. And even when the rain stops, wet ground and uncomfortable guests can be left wanting to avoid bad weather.
So when you’re planning a festival, wedding, community event, birthday, corporate event or live music weekend, it’s worth asking a simple question:
Do you want your guests to be watching the weather — or enjoying the event?
That’s where a Big Top marquee can make a major difference
The outdoor stage experience
An outdoor stage can look incredible and for a sunny summer’s day it can be great.
But an outdoor stage normally means that the audience remains exposed to the elements.
If rain arrives, guests may have to stand in it.
If it is cold, they feel it.
If the ground becomes wet, the event site can quickly become a mud-pit.
And if conditions deteriorate significantly, the organiser may suddenly find themselves dealing with a much bigger problem than simply getting a little wet.
The performers may have cover.
The production equipment may have cover.
But what about the people who have paid to attend?
That’s the part of the weather equation that can sometimes be overlooked.

A Big Top changes the equation massively.
A Big Top creates something very different.
Instead of simply putting a stage outside and hoping the weather behaves, you’re creating a temporary venue for your audience.
They can be installed on grass or concrete and can be configured for different types of events. Often not far off the same price as an exposed stage. Plus you can also put your own stage inside too!
The sides can also be removed or adjusted, allowing the structure to be adapted to changing conditions rather than being a completely enclosed space all day.
That means you can have the best of both worlds:
The atmosphere of an outdoor event, with somewhere substantial for your guests to shelter.
What happens when it rains?
Imagine your event has been planned for months.
The stage is built.
The profit is yet to be made.
The entertainment is booked.
The bar is stocked.
The food traders are ready.
The tickets have been sold.
Then the forecast changes.
With an exposed outdoor audience, the rain becomes part of the event whether you want it to or not.
With a Big Top, rain doesn’t necessarily mean everyone has to stop what they’re doing.
Guests can remain under cover, continue watching the entertainment, enjoy the atmosphere, visit the bar, dance, eat and socialise.
And importantly, the event can still feel like an event.
That’s one of the biggest differences between simply hiring a stage and creating a covered event space. Come rain or shine, a shelter is there to be used and can save an event.
It’s not just about rain
British weather isn’t just rain.
It’s wind.
It’s cold.
It’s sudden temperature changes.
It’s bright sunshine.
It’s muddy or wet ground.
It’s the uncomfortable combination of several of these conditions at once.
A good event plan needs to consider the conditions that your guests, performers and staff may actually experience on the day.
Some structures are designed specifically for touring events and have a stated 60 mph wind rating, subject to the appropriate installation, site conditions and operating requirements.
You can still have a proper stage
One common misconception is that choosing a marquee means compromising on the production.
It doesn’t have to.
Mashup Events can install a raised platform stage and overhead truss inside the Big Top, with configurations suitable for bands, DJs and hosts. Sound and lighting can also be incorporated.
That means your Big Top can become much more than somewhere for people to hide from the rain.
It can become the main attraction.
Music.
Lighting.
DJs.
Live bands.
Entertainment.
Dancing.
Bars.
And thousands of people sharing the same covered space.
The result can feel much more like a dedicated festival venue than a marquee that has simply been put up as an emergency shelter.
Big Top sizes for different events
One of the advantages of using a Big Top is that you don’t necessarily need a structure that is far larger than your event requires. With people like us, you can book a smaller tent and then upgrade the size to suit ticket sales.
12m × 18m
A more compact option for smaller events, weddings, birthdays and festivals.
18m × 18m
A popular configuration for larger weddings, festivals and funfairs, with capacity for up to around 600 standing depending on the layout.
18m × 24m
A larger format suitable for events requiring additional audience and production space.
18m × 30m
A substantial Arena-style structure capable of accommodating around 1,000 standing or approximately 700 seated, depending on the event layout.
What about sunny weather?
This is where the Big Top can really work in your favour.
A covered venue isn’t only useful when it rains.
On a hot, bright day, shade can be just as valuable.
Instead of hundreds of guests standing directly under the sun for hours, you have a substantial covered area where people can take a break from the heat while still being part of the event.
And because the sides are removable, the space can be adapted to the conditions and the atmosphere you’re trying to create.
So you’re not necessarily choosing:
Inside OR outside.
You’re creating a flexible event environment that can work with the conditions.
What about the atmosphere?
This is perhaps the biggest misconception about marquees.
Some people imagine a marquee as a plain white box with plastic walls.
Once you add a stage, lighting, sound, bar, dance floor and entertainment, the structure becomes part of the experience.
The roof becomes part of the lighting environment.
The walls become part of the visual identity.
The crowd becomes part of the atmosphere.
And the sound and energy stay concentrated inside the venue.
That can create an entirely different feeling from an exposed outdoor stage.
The biggest difference? Your guests
Ultimately, an event isn’t just about the stage.
It’s about the people standing in front of it.
Ask yourself what you want those people to remember.
Do you want them saying:
“The band was brilliant, but we were absolutely soaked.”
Or:
“That was one hell of a party.”
British weather doesn’t have to ruin an outdoor event.
But it does need to be planned for.
A Big Top doesn’t remove every weather consideration and it doesn’t replace proper event management, risk assessment or weather monitoring.
What it does give you is something extremely valuable:
A dedicated covered space that allows your guests to continue enjoying the event when the weather isn’t cooperating.
Don’t leave your guests at the mercy of the forecast
If you’re already spending money on entertainment, production, catering, bars, security, staff and promotion, the weather shouldn’t be an afterthought.
An outdoor stage can be spectacular.
But a Big Top can give you something an exposed stage cannot:
A roof over your audience.
And when you’ve spent months planning an event, that extra layer of protection can make all the difference.
